To be candid, I am a total homebody. I love being at home, reading, putzing through housework, and participating in seemingly monotonous tasks. Yeah, not a great opening for a page that is titled "Adventures," but I'm just being real here. While I am a homebody, I truly do love to explore and experience new things. I like to collect those experiences and use them to help me relate to others that I come in contact with. Sometimes my adventures take me outside the United States, but most often I look for adventure in everyday living. I want to experience new things not just blindly wander through life doing the same old, same old. Some experiences that I like to collect include trying a new restaurant that just opened, visiting the zoo to see what the penguins are up to that day, or exploring a new exhibit at a museum.
Most of the time I am with my son who is currently eleven years old. He learns best through experiences so for the past several summers I have created a bucket list with a variety of experiences and activities that will expand his thinking and give him a foundation for a well rounded life. Sometimes we visit the same place over and over. We learn the patterns of the animals at the zoo and laugh at their antics. We bask in the sun lit Rivera Court at the DIA. We walk through Greenfield Village getting to know the historical figures a little better each time. There's comfort in knowing an area and anticipating seeing something familiar. Sometimes we go to new places. There's discomfort in navigating places that we are not all together familiar with. That discomfort is really good. I want to feel that discomfort. I want to feel slightly lost. I want to push the boundaries of my comfort level to push myself. This can be hard for me, but when I successfully navigating a new place I experience a surge of confidence. I've seen this confidence boost in my son who is much better at reading a map than I am. (Sigh, sad but true) He reads the map, gets us where we want to be, and then proudly basks in the accomplishment of having navigated through an unfamiliar place. I hope to inspire you to get out there and do something daring. Visit someplace new. Order something new. Get lost - preferably in a safe area of town. Experience life at its best. God created a gorgeous world full of so much beauty and he has opened up so many opportunities for investing in the world around us. Join in the adventure!
